Following a phone call between Macron and his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the French presidency stated that this visit will contribute to the future deepening of bilateral relations as well as the strengthening of French-Algerian cooperation in confronting regional challenges and continuing to work on colonial-era memory.
Algeria’s ambassador to France resumed his duties in Paris at the beginning of this year, following a diplomatic conflict between the two countries.
The ambassador was recalled in October 2021 after French President Emmanuel Macron was quoted in the publication Le Monde as saying that Algeria’s political-military leadership had rewritten the history of French colonialism based on France’s hatred, assertions Algeria termed irresponsible.
France agreed to open the archive of judicial investigations into the Algerian conflict (1954-1962) 15 years before the legal date and almost 60 years after independence, a new gesture from Paris for the reconciliation with Algeria that French President Emmanuel Macron started some years ago.
