Tehran cooperates with Moscow in the gas industry in light of Western sanctions

LEBANON – In light of the Western sanctions placed on Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine, Iran said on Sunday that it had reached an agreement with Russia to supply it with forty turbines. This agreement is intended to assist Russia in the gas business.
The Iranian Oil Ministry News Agency (Shanna) quoted the CEO of the Iranian Gas Development and Engineering Company, Reda Noshdi, as saying that the Iranian economic successes “are not limited to the sectors of missiles and drones.

“A recent contract was inked to sell 40 Iranian-made turbines to Russia based on the fact that 85% of the facilities and equipment required by the gas industry are now produced domestically.
Nosadi did not mention the day the contract was signed with Moscow or the day the turbines would be delivered.
Russia has reduced or stopped its gas supplies to various European countries after imposing economic sanctions on it, which led to high energy prices.

The Kremlin maintains that the sanctions prohibited the upkeep of Russian gas infrastructure and the restoration of turbines made by the “Siemens” business that were the subject of revisions in Canada.
In referring to the gas pipeline connecting Russia and Germany, Russian President Vladivostok declared, “Give us your turbine, and we will run Nord Stream the next day.”
Western countries accuse Russia of using gas “weapon.

According to Nosadi, the goal of the US sanctions against Russia is to keep Moscow off the gas market. In recent years, the United States of America has established facilities for the production of liquefied natural gas on a large scale, and recently, with the comprehensive embargo imposed on Russia and then the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, effectively excluded one of its largest competitors in the field of gas exports.

Despite being subject to tight US sanctions and having vast gas reserves, Russia and Iran have emphasised in recent months how crucial it is to improve their bilateral relations.
Putin travelled to Tehran in July, when he met with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim Raisi. Khamenei also advocated for the expansion of “long-term collaboration” with Moscow.

Tehran recently denied providing Russia weapons after Kyiv and its Western partners accused Moscow of using Iranian -made drones to launch attacks in Ukraine.
On Monday, the British Ministry of Defense claimed that Russia was still using drones built in Iran to attack locations all throughout Ukraine.

The ministry added in a post on Twitter that Russia is probably using Iranian-136-style Iranian aircraft to penetrate the Ukrainian air defenses and an alternative to long-term micro-arms manufactured in Russia, which has become rare.
The Ministry praised Ukraine’s success in keeping drones under control.

In response to Western sanctions, Tehran collaborates with Moscow in the gas sector.
