A former White House top strategist and close ally of Donald Trump who was sentenced to prison for contempt of Congress appeared in court in New York today, while protesters waved placards and hurled insults at him.
Steve Bannon appeared before a New York judge who sentenced the right-wing radio host to four months in jail for his refusal to divulge his knowledge of the attack on the US Capitol on January 6.
However, Bannon was allowed to leave the courtroom unharmed for the time being because his attorneys quickly filed an appeal.
“I respect the judge and the verdict he rendered today. He makes the choice, “Bannon spoke to reporters in front of the court.
I have the utmost regard for both him and the entire judicial process.
Bannon will also be required to pay a $6500 (NZD11k) fine.
A six-month sentence and a NZ$347,000 (US$200,000) fine have been requested by the prosecution.
Bannon had been more than prepared to make references to upcoming events in the activities building up to the riot.
On January 5, 2021, during his radio show, he warned his audience that “all hell is going to break out tomorrow.”
“All of it is convergent. We have reached the point of attack now, as they say. It’ll be incredibly different in many ways. All I can add is to buckle up.”
Bannon had been subpoenaed by the committee entrusted with looking into attempts to rig the 2020 election.
In addition, Donald Trump was officially served with his own subpoena today, as had been stated by the bipartisan parliamentarians at their previous formal session.
Trump responded to the subpoena with a 14-page letter, having previously stated he would be open to testifying before the committee.
He remained silent when asked if he was still open to responding to any of the committee’s inquiries.
Trump supporter Steve Bannon was given a 4-month prison term.
