Canada’s freeze on buying, selling handguns is now in effect

The federal public safety minister announced the implementation of measures to freeze the number of firearms in Canada in a post on social media on Friday.
“As of today, there is a national firearm ban in Canada!” Marco Mendicino, the minister of public safety, tweeted something. Anywhere in Canada, purchasing, selling, or transferring a handgun is currently prohibited.

“To assist reduce gun-related violence, the Liberals unveiled a plan in May to impose a ban on the importation, purchase, sale, or other transfer of handguns.
Mendicino introduced regulatory reforms at that time in the Senate and the House of Commons.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mendicino were expected to hold a news conference in the Vancouver area later Friday to discuss the move.
However, accompanying legislative measures have yet to be approved by Parliament.

The proposed legislation would maintain the ability of exceptional sport shooters to own handguns, an exemption that some would like to be extended to more leisure shooters.
At a different event in Montreal, Justice Minister David Lametti acknowledged the laws had started to take effect but criticized any attempts to loosen the freeze.
Lametti stated in French that it was “uncomfortable and even surprising to see an attempt to reduce the scope of this statute and provide greater space to pistols.”

“We’re here to make our streets safer by lowering the quantity of pistols there,”

The ban on the sale and purchase of firearms in Canada has taken effect.
