The Turkish business, IC Holding, stated that construction on the $20 billion Turkish nuclear plant project has been paused after the Russian nuclear technology corporation Rosatom rejected the Turkish company in favour of another Turkish company backed by Russian firms.

It should be noted that IC is the project’s prime contractor, employing more than 80% of the total workforce at its site, which employs over 25,000 people.

Last month, Rosatom-controlled Akkuyu Nuclear cancelled the project contract with IC and replaced it with another Turkish company.
According to Russia’s state-owned Rosatom, the change in the major contractor for the Akkuyu nuclear plant project will not create a delay in construction.
Turkey intends to complete the project, which has a capacity of 4,800 megawatts of energy, as soon as possible in order to reduce its dependency on imported natural gas for electrical generation. The government hopes to begin construction on the first of four reactors for the project within the next year.
The development of a nuclear power plant in Turkey has been halted.
