The new project, dubbed the “Green Energy Corridor” by Sanchez, replaces the “Medikat” concept, which first surfaced roughly ten years ago but was shelved in 2019 owing to administrative and financial difficulties.
However, Russia stopped delivering gas to most of Europe in response to the sanctions imposed on it due to its war in Ukraine, the interest in creating a link to transfer supplies from Spain to the rest of the continent has returned.
Due to the high cost of energy resources, Madrid pushed Berlin to fully back the project’s revival after “Nord Stream” shut off the gas supply.
“We agreed (. . . ) a new project called the green energy corridor to connect the Iberian Peninsula to France, and thus the European energy market between Barcelona and Marseille. ”
The pipeline will move gas and hydrogen “during a transitional time that the European energy market needs,” according to Sanchez.
The new project could aid the European Union in bolstering its imports with stronger connecting lines. Spain has six liquefied natural gas stations to treat the sea that reaches the sea.
There are now just two low-capacity connections between Spain and the French gas network that are connected to the rest of Europe.
