Over 1.5M dry shampoo products recalled in Canada over cancer risk

The discovery of benzene, a chemical that causes cancer, has led to the recall of thousands of Unilever hair products across Canada.
More than 1.5 million dry shampoo products made by Dove, Bed Head, and Tresemme and sold in the nation between January 2020 and October 2022 were subject to a recall on Tuesday by Health Canada.
So far, no incidents or injuries have been reported from the affected products, which are packaged in aerosol cans.

Health Canada advised consumers to cease using the recalled product right once and dispose of it in line with the disposal directions on the label.
An internal study, according to Unilever Canada, found that “possibly high quantities of benzene” were found in some lots of dry shampoo products.
It added in a statement Tuesday that it has worked with its propellant suppliers to address the issue.

The distributor stated that “Unilever Canada is recalling certain goods out of an excess of caution.”
According to Unilever, the impacted items were created before October 2021.
The recall extends beyond just Canada.
Products by Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé have also had their dry shampoos recalled in the US.
Unilever said people who have bought the affected products will receive a refund or reimbursement.

Benzene is a carcinogen and exposure to the chemical by inhalation, through the mouth or skin, can result in leukemia, blood cancer of the bone marrow, and blood disorders which can be life-threatening, according to Health Canada.
All of the recalled dry shampoo products are listed on Canada.ca.

Canada has recalled over 1.5 million dry shampoo products due to a cancer risk.
