Malaysia announces a date for early legislative elections

News from Al-Madinah: The date of the early legislative elections to re-elect members of Parliament was announced by the Malaysian Electoral Committee on Thursday.
The committee declared that the elections would take place on November 19 in the nation, which has had three governments in the past four years.
In spite of its concerns about the rise of the opposition, the ruling party, which is being chased by corruption scandals, seeks to tighten its hold on the reins of authority.

On October 10, the Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaqoub called for the dissolution of Parliament and the holding of early elections, claiming that this would put an end to years of political unrest.
The head of the committee, Abdel -Ghani Saleh, said in a press conference that the candidates will have to submit their nomination to Parliament on November 5.

The elections take place in September 2023, although before the deadline. They also coincide with Malaysia’s annual monsoon season, which has already resulted in widespread flooding there.
This year, around 21 million Malaysian citizens are eligible to cast ballots to choose representatives for the council’s 222 seats.
The next administration will be formed by the party or coalition that secures a simple majority, or 112 seats.

Since the 2018 elections, which saw the reformist Prime Minister Mahathir Muhammad defeat the security party, which had ruled the nation for more than 60 years, Malaysia has again experienced political upheaval.
Prime Minister Najib Razzaq Al-Dhalea was penalised by the electorate at the time for embezzling millions of dollars from the sovereign “1MDB” fund. And he continued to be imprisoned.

However, the government of Mahathir Muhammad lost the majority after 22 months after it took power, and several officials continued to rule with the return of the dominant “security” coalition accused of corruption cases.
