This book examines the struggles faced by Arab nations as they sought independence. In the first phase, which was dominated by the radical nationalist ideologies of the Arab world, these ideologies were highly successful in achieving both geographical and political independence, whether in regards to the Ottoman Empire or the European colonial powers. This phase saw the emergence of independent Arab nations, some of which are discussed in this book.

The failure of the radical Arab nationalism lies in its misfortune with a number of issues Fateh (secularism, law, political representation, economy building, market requirements, globalisation, and civil rights). Islamism is a viable alternative, but it also suffers from excessive utopianism, a lack of a defined programme of governance, and ambiguity in its stance on democracy and individual liberties—deficiencies that “post-Islamism” attempts to correct, in varying degrees, particularly in Turkey, Iran, and Morocco.
