US woman accused of freeing swarm of bees on police officers

A Massachusetts lady is accused of releasing a swarm of bees on a group of sheriff’s deputies who were attempting to serve an eviction notice and some of whom were allergic to bee stings. She is charged with multiple counts of assault and battery.
Masslive.com, citing court documents, reported today that Rorie S. Woods, 55, entered a not guilty plea at her arraignment on October 12 in Springfield District Court and was released without bail.
The Associated Press left a voicemail for her attorney, but they did not immediately return it.

According to the official department report, protesters met the deputies from the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department when they went to a residence in Longmeadow on the morning of October 12.
According to the report, Woods, a Hadley resident, arrived shortly in an SUV pulling a trailer loaded with bee hives. She started “shaking” the hives, and broke the cover off one, causing hundreds of bees to swarm out and initially sting one deputy, according to the report.

Several more sheriff’s department personnel, including three who are allergic to bees, were stung before Woods, who had donned a beekeeper’s gear to protect herself, was eventually detained, the report stated.
When Woods learned that some police officers had bee allergies, she responded “You have allergies, huh? Good “as reported in the article.
Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi said Woods could have faced more serious charges if anything worse had happened to those stung.

Fortunately, Cocchi remarked, “We only had one staff member go to the hospital and he was well.”
