After reaching an agreement … the suspension of the bakery strike in Tunisia

According to Arabic/Al -Hadath, the secretary of the union’s sincere grain union, the National Chamber of Bakery Owners in Tunisia decided to suspend the strike that it carried out in all regions of the country on Wednesday, after reaching an agreement with the authorities on the support dues allocated to the sector.

He also added that an agreement was reached with the Ministry of Commerce to exempt bakery proprietors tomorrow, Thursday, from the state’s first batch of dues, provided that the second batch is paid at the beginning of next month.

Earlier today, Tunisian bakeries went on strike, forcing the vast majority of employees to miss work in protest of the state’s unwillingness to pay its obligations.

On Wednesday, around 3,200 bakeries went on strike in order to demand that the government pay financial dues for the year 2021 in exchange for bread preparation.

According to press remarks from one of the union’s executives, the National Chamber of Bakery Owners advocated for “paying dues 14 months in exchange for supporting the bread business.”

The union also reported that 95% of the bakeries receiving government baking assistance shuttered their doors on Wednesday and will continue to do so until an agreement is reached.

These bakeries are intended to get government financial assistance, but the authorities have not paid their owners the expected amount of 250 million dinars since 2021. (about 78 million euros).

Tunisia goes over a month without essential consumables like sugar and milk.

Last week, refuelling operations saw substantial disruptions within the stations, which lasted five days.

Tunisia has been in an economic crisis for years, and the International Monetary Fund announced on Saturday that it had reached an agreement with Tunisian authorities at the level of experts to give it a loan of $ 1. 9 billion over 48 months pending the approval of the end that will be approved next December.

In exchange for the loan, the Tunisian government agrees to adopt a package of changes, the most essential of which is to evaluate the support policy and provide it its entitlements, as well as to restructure government enterprises.
