Unauthorized immigration persisted as a new tragedy rocked Tunisia.
After Ahlam’s wife and baby daughter drowned during an unauthorised migratory route that began from the shore of the city of Gerges, east of Tunisia, and resulted in the deaths of 18, the Mediterranean Sea buried Ahlam and Karim’s wishes, who lived in Italy.
During a discussion with “Al Arabiya.
net”, Karim recounted the specifics of the horror that he and several other families had to go through, saying that his wife and daughter were made to ride illegal immigration boats in an effort to catch him after their attempts to get a visa failed.
He also said that he had communicated with them while they were waiting for their arrival to Italian territory, causing him to return to Tunisia to look for them at sea with the fishing boats that took part in searching the sea for the missing.
However, more than a week following the investigation, his wife discovered a dead body in Gabes Governorate. She was unable to locate his daughter’s body at this time or arrange for her burial.
In protest against the failure of his daughter’s remains, the major route in the city of Gerges was closed, and rubber tyres were set ablaze. He stressed that he would not give up and would not open the doors to his home to receive condolences before discovering them.
This occurs as the families of the missing persons continue to ask for updates on the whereabouts of their children and call for the discovery of their bodies and payment for their burial.
