Wisconsin governor candidate Michels: “I will never arrest a doctor”

AP – Madison, Wisconsin The Republican nominee for governor of Wisconsin says he would never jail a doctor and that he would not enforce the state’s almost complete ban on abortions.
Abortion is a key topic in Tim Michels’ close contest against Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.
The way that Michels feels about abortion has been evolving. He formerly supported the state’s nearly complete ban but now favours exceptions for rape and incest.

Additionally, he said he would not enforce the Wisconsin statute passed in 1849 that deems performing an abortion a crime during a campaign appearance on Tuesday. Michels stated, “I will never arrest a doctor, as they are suggesting,” during a question-and-answer session at the Milwaukee Rotary Club. I’m a sensible guy, you know.
Michels’s remarks were later corrected by a spokeswoman, who said, “The D. A. s. should enforce all laws. An executive is the governor. He’s not a D. A. or beat cop arresting anyone. ”.
