The arrest of a new group of immigrants in Morocco on the borders of Melilla

According to a judicial source on Monday, “Agence France Presse,” the Moroccan authorities have detained 25 unauthorised immigrants, the bulk of them are from Sudan and Chad, on the outskirts of the city of Nador in the northeast of the nation, on the borders with the Spanish province of Melilla.

The immigrants were “arrested on Sunday during a routine combing operation for security interests in the context of combating clandestine immigration,” according to the source. The operation took place in the Mount Koroko forest, which looks down on the cities of Nador and Melilla and is a common hiding place for immigrants who are trying to sneak into the Spanish enclave.
Having noted that “several of them confronted the security officers with violence,” he clarified that they will appear before the Public Prosecution in Nador, who will be handling their case.

Human rights organisations are defending the freedom of migrants to relocate, on the grounds that they are refugees seeking a better life to escape conflicts, famine, or poverty, even if fighting irregular migration is a crucial area of cooperation between Morocco and Spain.
During the recent period, dozens of migrants, most of whom were Sudanese and some of them Chadians, were convicted in separate trials by “illegally entering into Moroccan soil” and “violence against public officials.

They were sentenced to varying periods, before the sentences were tightened before the appeal to three years in prison for a group of them.

According to Moroccan authorities, they were detained following an attempt by 2,000 immigrants to storm the borders of the Melilla pocket in late June, which resulted in the deaths of 23 of them. These deaths represent the most severe human losses of any kind during immigrant attempts to enter my pocket, which includes Ceuta and Melilla, which serve as the only land borders between the European Union and Africa.
