According to a report by Agence France-Presse, the beach next to San Clemente, California, is being devoured by the Pacific Ocean as a result of climate change.
The “Pacific Serflener” railway runs along San Clemente’s coastline. Years ago, the line and the beach were more than 100 metres apart, but the ocean water has since destroyed this space.
The ground moved under the railway due to the tropical storm Kai’s waves in September of last year, which resulted in the loss of around 8.3 million people travelling annually between San Diego and San Lewis Obebisu.
The devastation goes beyond just the railway.
“I come here every day and I practically cry for this scene,” 68-year-old Steve Lang, who lives in a lavish home in San Clemente with a view of the ocean, told AFP.
“The price of each villa was at least 10 million dollars,” he said.
This natural occurrence is made worse by the high water levels brought on by the melting of the ice rivers and the strong waves brought on by the warming of the ocean.
By the year 2050, facilities are expected to become between 8 and 10 billion dollars under water in California, while other buildings will be valued between 6 and 10 billion in an area vulnerable to tide, according to a study published at the end of 2019, the state council office..
