The European Union meets to impose sanctions on Iran

The European Union’s foreign ministers met to adopt sanctions against Iran in response to the continued international condemnation of the Iranian regime’s repression of the popular protests, which are now in their second month. Many of them denounced the regime’s campaign of repression against the protesters.
Diplomats told AFP that the list of sanctions approved by the European Union ambassadors before the meeting of the ministers includes 11 officials and four entities.

Visas to the European Union will be prohibited, and their assets will be frozen.
German Foreign Minister Analeina Perbuk said that among the targets of the sanctions, “what is called the Ethics Police, which is a truly inappropriate word when you see the crimes committed there.

“The European Union expressed its displeasure with the bloody campaign launched by the regime in response to the protests that were sparked by the death of the 22-year-old woman, a young woman who had been detained by the Ethics Police a month earlier for disobeying the Islamic Republic’s stringent dress codes.

“We will not be able and will not close our eyes to it when you see these awful images of the jail fire, when you see peaceful people, women and men, increasingly young men and students, who are still being badly assaulted.”
I also said that “greater violence will follow” if the current trend continues.
Sanctions against security personnel, elected officials, and those who instigated unrest, according to Swedish Secretary Anne Lindy, who called the decision “necessary and supported.”

The foreign minister of Luxembourg, Jean Asselbourne, expressed scepticism on whether the sanctions imposed by the European Union were “damaging” to Iran, but he said, “This system may have been effective for the previous forty years, but it is no longer functional. That is why the European Union needs to act right away.
The United States, Britain and Canada have already announced sanctions against Iran for the human rights violations that are now taking place..
