The new president of Iraq: I will seek strong relations with the neighboring countries and the international community

News from Al-Madinah: The new Iraqi President, Abdul Latif Rashid, expressed today his hope to form the government quickly, stressing his intention to focus on establishing balanced relations between his country and neighboring countries.

Rashid promised to shortly disclose his work plan for the presidency of the republic in a speech that was broadcast on television as he took over from his predecessor, Barham Saleh. He also pledged to try his best to bring the political parties together and take care of their talks.
He continued by saying he would endeavour to defend the constitution and help find solutions to issues involving the Kurdistan region and the national government.

Today, Barham Saleh handed over the reins of power to President Abdul Latif Rashid at Baghdad’s Al Salam Palace.
After being elected as president by Parliament last Thursday, Rashid al-Yam al-Yamayn appointed Mohamed Shi’a Al-Sudani, the coordinating framework candidate, to create the new government.
It is noteworthy that Rashid was elected president of the republic, with 162 votes compared to 99 for President Barham Saleh, and 8 void votes.

The Sadrist movement led by Muqtada al-Sadr and the so-called “coordination framework” (which includes the State of Law coalition led by Nuri al-Maliki, the Al-Fateh alliance, and other factions loyal to Iran) experienced a raging political crisis in Iraq that prevented the election of a president of the republic or the formation of a government.

While 30 people died in violent skirmishes between the two sides in central Baghdad on August 29, 2022, the war had now become more prone to serious escalation.
