The day after the African Union requested a “immediate” end to hostilities, the Ethiopian government reiterated its declaration that it is prepared to undertake negotiations while simultaneously reaffirming its desire to regain control of federal sites in the northern Tigray area.
To “protect the sovereignty and integrity of the country’s lands,” the authorities declared in a statement, “it is necessary for the Ethiopian government to restore immediate control over all airports and other federal infrastructure and installations in Tigray,” adding that it “is determined to a peaceful solution to the conflict through peace talks sponsored by the African Union.”
After a non-governmental organisation employee was killed in a bombing on Monday, the Ethiopian government expressed its “deep regret” for all “damages to civilians, especially the humanitarian workers,” during the fighting in the Ethiopian Tigray region.
The government criticised the rebels’ “known habit of utilising citizens as human shields and civil facilities for military reasons” and reiterated “its demand to civilians and humanitarian workers to move away from the military facilities” in Tigray.
The Ethiopian Tigrai Liberation Front declared on Sunday that it would abide by the cease-fire ruling. The front said that if the aggression is not stopped, we will have to fight to defend our people.
The Tigray Liberation Front, a global coalition, demanded “pressure on the Eritrean military to depart from its area,” pointing out the catastrophic nature of the country’s humanitarian condition.
The Tigray Liberation Front stressed the need to pressure the Ethiopian government to stop the “aggression” and sit at the negotiating table, pointing out that without achieving peace in Tigray will not be peace in Ethiopia.
The Front charged Tigray-based government officials with crimes against humanity.
