Al-Mousa to Al-Rai: I oppose giving 2 million square metres in Shaqaya for camel breeding.

Minister of Public Works and Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy Engineer Ali Al-Mousa reiterated his support for the Municipal Council’s decision to turn down the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries’ request to set aside 2 million square metres for camel breeding in the Shaqaya region.

Al-Mousa informed Al-Rai that the municipality’s decision is currently being examined in cabinet committees in accordance with the procedures outlined by municipal law. He also stated that he supports the council’s decision to reject the allocation, particularly given the request’s three-year age and the need for re-examination, as well as the Specialists’ opinions that such projects are unnecessary.

In order to prevent state property from being used in violation of the law and governing regulations, he emphasised the necessity of ongoing inspection campaigns on agricultural plots. He also noted that agricultural holdings should contribute to enhancing food security, particularly in light of the events that have occurred in the world over the last three years that have affected food supply chains globally and in the region.

Following control operations that revealed the conversion of six agricultural plots, totaling 725,000 square metres, to warehouses, factories, and scrap, in violation of the terms of use and contract, Al-Mousa announced that the owners had been referred to the General Department of Investigations and that legal steps to withdraw the holdings and return them to the Agriculture Authority were being taken.

Al-Mousa to Al-Rai: I object to Shaqaya receiving 2 million square metres for camel breeding.
