A technological expert warned of a trap that Facebook and Instagram app users fell into, stressing that internal website browsing provides these sites with software codes that allow tracking the user.

According to the website Engadget, which is concerned with technical matters, Felix Krause explained that the internal browser of Facebook or Instagram injects JavaScript code into each site visited by the user of the two applications, allowing the company Meta, which owns the two applications, to monitor all user interactions, including passwords, addresses, and credit card numbers.

Krause concentrated his investigation on the iOS versions of the two programmes because the corporation that owns it (Apple) allows users to discontinue tracking the application after opening it for the first time, and Apple is recognised for its electronic security guarantees.

The technological expert also stated that while the Facebook programme does not employ codes to capture personal data like Instagram, accessing websites within it is still risky.

Krause urged users of these applications to use external browsers to access the Internet, citing the Safari and Firefox browsers in particular for data security guarantees, indicating that they protect the user from monitoring malware by encrypting browsing.

He also stated that other Meta -owned applications do not follow users in the same way that Facebook and Instagram do, particularly the popular messaging service WhatsApp, because the latter’s working technique is the best for the user, and the proper thing to do.

According to the British publication The Guardian, a Meta spokeswoman previously indicated that the tracking software collects user data before it is utilised for advertising or targeted measurement purposes exclusively.

He emphasised that purchases done through the internal browser are only made with the user’s agreement, with payment information being kept for the purposes of eventual auto-filling.

Users of Facebook and Instagram can remove tracking codes by using the Links open externally function, which will open any website in the default external browser when clicking on its link.
