Obama: Not supporting the 2009 protests in Iran was a mistake

With the entry of Iranian protests condemning the murder of Muhsa Amini for the second month, former US President Barack Obama admitted that his administration’s approach to not supporting the green movement’s protests in 2009 was a mistake.
“We must put it in our interest and show support with him wherever he finds a glimpse of hope and people seeking freedom,” he continued.

The president should back these demonstrations, halt nuclear negotiations, and deliver a speech urging all political prisoners, he continued.
Obama’s comments came, after US President Joe Biden announced that he was “amazed” over the mass protests that have been witnessing the largest wave of demonstrations in years, calling on Iran to stop violence against its citizens.

During a lecture today, Saturday, in one of the colleges in the city of Erfen in California, Biden continued, “I want you to know that we are standing alongside people, and Iran’s strong women.
“I am startled by what I have woken up (the protests in Iran),” he concluded. I have awakened something that I do not think will be disturbed for a long time, and very long.

It is noteworthy that since Amini’s passing, anger has been sparked by a number of issues, including the limitations placed on individual freedoms and the stringent regulations governing women’s attire, as well as the Iranian people’s dire living and economic conditions, not to mention the rigid regulations imposed by the country’s political system as a whole.
