School board investigating after teacher allegedly used racial slur in Ajax, Ont. classroom

The Durham District School Board (DDSB) has confirmed that it is looking into claims that a teacher in Ajax, Ontario, used a racist slur.
The board said it is “investigating complaints that a teacher used a racial slur in the classroom” at Viola Desmond public school in a statement emailed to Global News on Friday.
The message added, “We are taking this matter very seriously, and a guest instructor is presently conducting this session while we conduct an inquiry.”

The board added that it is “taking action to rectify this situation,” saying that racist slurs and all other types of discrimination covered by the Human Rights Code “cause harm and are unacceptable in our learning and working environments.”
In response to the alleged occurrence, the DDSB says it is providing help to the students affected.
