Turkey supports Russia in transporting gas to Europe

Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested this week that Turkey would be a base for gas supply after last month explosions caused damage to the Nord Stream pipeline in the part of which he passes under the Baltic Sea. After the Ukrainian war in February, the European Union, which sourced roughly 40% of its gas needs from Russia, is looking to cut ties with that country.

On the one hand, Alexei Miller, CEO of Russia, stated that it might be necessary to replace large sections of the Nord Stream pipeline that are primarily used to supply gas to Europe due to severe damage, while Turkey supported Russian proposals to build a gas centre in it on Friday in order to serve as an alternative to supplies.

The major imported countries in the European Union, such as Germany and Italy, found alternative sources and collected a stock of gas before the winter, which will be more severe due to the crazy increase in energy prices and fears of codifying power shares and power outages.
Additionally, a significant volume of gas leaked over the course of the previous month as a result of the demolition of the Nord Stream 1 and Word Stream 2 tunnels, which link Germany and Russia.

Without holding anyone accountable, both Russia and the West claimed that the damage to the pipelines was caused by the act of sabotage.
Miller stated to the first Russian TV channel that “experts indicate that resuming operations after such a terrorist attack involves the removal of a very large sector of pipes, with an extended length, and the installation of a new alternative sector in reality.”

Considering that Nord Stream is no longer in operation, he continued, Russia will begin specific and practical discussions with Turkey about plans to increase gas flow through it the following week. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan requested the Ministry of Energy to work on developing a gas centre after discussions with Putin over this issue, according to (NTV) and other local Turkish news outlets.
