Turkish deputy breaks his phone in Parliament in protest against a new law

An opposition Turkish politician smashed the phone with a hammer in protest at the parliament’s acceptance of a new rule outlawing spreading false information on websites and social media.
Burak Airbay, an MP for the opposition Republican People’s Party, was seen in a video footage clutching his phone in one hand while holding a hammer in the other. He then repeatedly struck the phone with the hammer before throwing it to the ground.

Irbie added, “I have one freedom for you and your phones in your pockets that enable you to communicate via Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube,” as he destroyed his phone while making a statement about the law’s approval.
He said, “You can smash the phones and hurl them in this way if Parliament accepts the legislation of misinformation. You will not need it anymore.

Members of the ruling Justice and Development Party reacted violently to the opposition lawmaker’s behaviour, with one of them yelling, “Is it possible for a person to enter Parliament with a hammer?”
The Turkish parliament passed new law on Thursday that stipulates a prison penalty for posting “fake news” on social media.

There are roughly 40 changes to the law governing the use of social media in the legislation put forth by the government’s Justice and Development Party, which the opposition parties vehemently opposed.
