Shafintk, the first candidate for the title, defeated the Chinese Kinwing Cheng, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 18 minutes to face in the American quarter-final Coco Goff, the sixth candidate for the title and the eighth ranked globally, who toppled the Canadian Bianca Andersku by 6-4 and 4 -6 6-3 in two hours and 30 minutes.
For her part, Badosa, the second contender for the title, defeated American Luisa Cherico in the first round of the American championship with scores of 6-0 and 3-3 in 53 minutes. She will now play world No. 19 Daniel Collins in the quarterfinals.
After defeating the American Silwan Stevens at 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, Arena Sabalinka, the fifth-seeded player in the globe and the third contender for the crown, will play Donna Vikic, 77, in the Croatian quarterfinals.
After defeating Russian Daria Casckina, the ninth contender for the championship, 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 27 minutes, she also qualified for the quarterfinals of the American Madison Keys, ranked 18th in the world, to play her native Jessica Pegola, the sixth seed in the world.
Shafintk and Badosa are eligible for the quarterfinals of the San Diego championship.
