Wholesale corruption accusations … orders to imprison Libyan ambassadors and diplomats

A number of previous ambassadors and diplomatic personnel were sentenced to prison in Libya by the Public Prosecution on charges of embezzling public funds, bringing attention to the pervasive corruption inside diplomatic missions abroad.

Three former ambassadors to Ukraine have been imprisoned, the prosecution revealed yesterday, Thursday, as part of a scheme that involved the diplomatic corps. The foreigner violated the laws governing financial work and controls for maintaining public funds on behalf of themselves and other people, which caused substantial harm to public funds.

After establishing that they obtained tens of thousands of dollars in foreign currency for themselves and others in violation of the law, the prosecution also decided to place the Libyan ambassador to South Africa, as well as his predecessor and the embassy’s financial observer, in prison.

The former ambassador to Uganda was also added to the list of depositors behind bars after being accused of transferring $250,000 in contravention of the law governing the use of public funds and providing value-added illicit material benefits to others.

The Public Prosecution decided to jail the financial observer of the Libyan Mission to Qatar and its predecessor on charges of intending to misuse their positional authority in order to amass tens of thousands of dollars in foreign currency for themselves and others.

A few weeks ago, the Audit Bureau released a report that discussed a number of financial irregularities relating to an unjustified increase in the costs of Libyan diplomatic missions and indicated that some Libyan embassies were linked to corruption.
