Bassam Tohme, the Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources, discussed the oil and gas projects being carried out with the Russian side and also touched on the exploration process taking place in the eastern Mediterranean waters.
The Syrian minister commended the Russian energy industry and asserted that the traits that distinguish the Russian energy sector from others across the world in an interview with RT for the “New Zamikker” programme that was conducted on the sidelines of the “Russian Energy Week” summit.
Regarding the joint projects being carried out with Russia, he stated: “There are significant projects being carried out by the Russian side, whether in the fields of oil and gas or phosphates. There is a compressor project in the south of the central region that cost more than 80 million euros and a few billions of Syrian pounds.
The Syrian minister stated that “the eastern Mediterranean region is rich in oil and gas deposits, especially gas, and we have preceded many nations in the field of exploration in these areas” in reference to the study of energy resources there.

He stressed that the US sanctions hinder any exploration operations on average, and he said: “In Syrian waters, a survey carried out by a Norwegian company in the year 2005, and any excavation operation that must be preceded by a survey (geological), and unfortunately the Syrian oil sector is subject to US sanctions, Which includes a ban on technology supply, Syria now needs to renew seizure surveying operations before excavation.
The minister continued: “Sanctions are a threat to every company that Syria tries to work with to undertake the survey, therefore finding alternatives to Western technology that Damascus forbids is essential to the position of (exploration) in the Mediterranean Sea. With two Russian enterprises, we currently have two contracts in the Mediterranean “.
