Queen’s University, Kingston police hope for safe ‘faux’ homecoming weekend

Although Queen’s University’s homecoming isn’t until the final weekend of October, some students seem to have decided to organise a “fake” homecoming a week earlier.
Queen’s University and the neighbourhood police are urging the public to “stay careful and respect the Kingston community” as early celebrations are rumoured to be taking place. The University District Safety Initiative was put into effect by the city and will run from October 14 to November 1.

According to Kingston police, it is done to promote neighbourhood safety and reduce the risk brought on by huge crowds.
According to a Kingston police news release, “Under the UDSI, a fine or charge received could be held as a permanent police record, having a substantial impact on future academic or employment opportunities.”
According to Ann Tierney, vice-principal and dean of student affairs at Queen’s University, “our focus is always the safety and well-being of our students and the Kingston community.”

The university and our partners acknowledge that students will mingle and interact.
The institution expresses worry about potential safety hazards and disturbances to the neighbourhood, such as climbing on roofs, shattering windows, obstructing streets, and showing disrespect to locals, other students, or emergency personnel.

“We are strongly encouraging everyone to be safe and respectful, and make choices that avoid placing additional stress on Kingston’s already strained health-care system,” Tierney added.
According to the university, employees, Kingston Bylaw personnel, and Kingston police will be knocking on doors in the University District to distribute wellness and harm reduction advice as well as information on the city’s University District Safety Initiative and possible fines.

During the month of October, 1,000 student households are anticipated to be visited.

Kingston police and Queen’s University aim for a safe “fake” homecoming weekend.
