Senator: Dems back reparations for those who ‘do the crime’

Washington, D.C. Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Texas, a Republican, claimed that Democrats back reparations for ancestors of slaves because “they think the individuals that conduct the crime are deserved that.”
The first-term Republican from Alabama spoke at a rally in Nevada on Saturday night that featured political ally and former President Donald Trump. In the closing weeks leading up to the Nov. election, his remarks were a part of a larger criticism.

8 election, when the balance of power in Congress is on the line, on how Democrats have handled the rise in crime. However, Tuberville’s comments regarding reparations contributed to racial prejudices about criminal behaviour among Black people.
Democrats, according to Tuberville, “aren’t soft on crime.” They support criminality. They desire crime. They want to take what you have, thus they want to commit crime. They desire the power over what you possess. They seek restitution because they believe the perpetrators of the atrocity should be held accountable.

He completed his performance with an expletive as the audience applauded.
Tuberville makes the misleading claim that Democrats encourage crime and that only Black people commit it. According to FBI statistics, crime has actually decreased over the past year, although white people are still the majority of offenders.

Reparations for Black Americans to make up for years of unpaid slave work by their ancestors have not been addressed by the Democratic Party, despite the fact that several prominent Democrats, such as President Joe Biden, support the formation of a national commission to look into the matter.
On Sunday, some Republicans found it difficult to justify Tuberville’s remarks.
Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., called the comments rude and said he “wouldn’t say it the same way.”

On “Meet the Press” on NBC, Bacon stated, “That’s not how I present things. But we must admit that crime is an issue in our nation.
A request for comment was made to Tuberville’s office on Sunday, but there was no immediate response.

Republicans have been attempting to end this election year by focusing on crime, often using alarmist or dubious rhetoric, akin to Trump’s late-stage argument during the 2020 campaign that Democratic-led cities were out of control.
According to FBI statistics made public last week, property and violent crime stayed largely stable between 2020 and 2021, with the incidence of violent crime overall slightly declining and the murder rate increasing by 4.3%.

That represents a decrease from 2020, when the murder rate in the US increased by 29%.
The absence of some of the biggest police agencies in the country contributes to the report’s inadequate image.
More generally, since the epidemic, rates of violent crime and homicide have risen across the United States, sometimes sharply after reaching historic lows.

According to a crime statistics analysis by The Brennan Center for Justice, nonviolent crime declined during the pandemic, while the murder rate increased by almost 30% in 2020, rising in both urban and rural areas. The investigation revealed a 10% increase in the attack rate.
The growth defies straightforward analysis.

Experts have identified a number of plausible causes, ranging from acute stress during the pandemic that has killed more than 1 million people in the United States to concerns about the economy and record high inflation rates.
