Football great claims account ‘hacked’ over ‘I’m gay’ post

Iker Casillas apologised to the LGBTQIA+ community and claimed that his official Twitter account had been hacked following a message that said, “I hope you respect me – I’m gay,” earlier on Sunday.
Before being deleted, the post received well over 100,000 likes and hundreds of reactions, one of which came from the verified account of Casillas’ former Spain teammate Carles Puyol and said: “Iker, it’s time to share our story.

Later on Sunday, Casillas—who made more than 500 games for Real Madrid and guided Spain to its first World Cup victory in 2010—explained: “Hacked account. Fortunately, everything is in order. I apologise to all of my supporters. Of course, I’d like to apologise again to the LGBT community.
In 2015, the 41-year-old quit Real to sign with Porto. He announced his retirement from professional football in August of the following year after having a small heart attack in 2019.

Josh Cavallo, a midfielder for Adelaide United, was not amused by the scenario after coming out as gay in October 2021. He was the only active male professional football player in one of the top leagues in the world to do so.
The 22-year-old Australian wrote: “@IkerCasillas and @Carles5puyol joking and making fun of coming out in football is upsetting” in a post that was published before Casillas’ tweet about being hacked.
Any LGBTQ+ person must endure a challenging journey.

It is beyond disrespectful to witness my heroes and sporting legends make fun of coming out and my community.
