Blind Oji-Cree artist ‘Mattmac’ wins Canada’s Walk of Fame emerging musician prize

The RBC Emerging Musician Program of Canada will honour Winnipeg-based musician Matthew Monias, also known as Mattmac, in 2022. He hails from the isolated Garden Hill First Nation in northern Manitoba.
His entry for the competition is a song called Isolation, and the music video for it was shot at Garden Hill.
Monias, who has been blind since birth, put out his debut album in 2020.

He stated on 680CJOB on October 6 that “I truly love doing this as a thing and it’s like one of my major passions.”
This is really great, and it offers a lot of possibilities and promise.
A self-taught pianist and guitarist, he has been singing since the age of four, writing songs since the age of thirteen, and creating music since the age of sixteen.
According to him, “a lot of what you hear is all self-produced, all self-done, I mix my own voices, and I also record my own vocals.”

The young artist has struggled with hardship throughout his entire career and wants to inspire others.
“I am making it mainstream I am doing things here, making huge moves, making big things happen, so who’s to say you can’t do the same,” he remarked to people who are blind and visually challenged around the world.

When asked what motivates him, he acknowledged that well-known musician Ed Sheeran is one of his greatest musical influences, but that his motivation comes from a variety of sources.
Many of my personal friends, family members, and coworkers, in particular, he stated.
Two albums from Mattmac are currently available. One has blurred visions, and the other is slanted 20/20.
His best song, Paradise, from his debut album debuted at the top of the Indigenous Music Countdown.

He said to Global News in 2020, “Being number one on this countdown is simply fantastic to me. I was at a loss for words because I’ve known about this countdown for the longest period ever.
The goal of Paradise and the rest of the CD is to connect with listeners who are dealing with particular difficulties in life.
It’s the little things like that that really make an album worthwhile. Monias stated, “If you can relate to a lyric, even if it’s just one phrase.

Mattmac, an Oji-Cree performer who is blind, has won Canada’s Walk of Fame’s rising musician award.
