Man City move top as Chelsea and Newcastle continue to rise

(Reuters) MANCHESTER – As Chelsea and Newcastle United both won easily to demonstrate their top-four aspirations, Manchester City kept up their dominant home form to easily defeat Southampton 4-0 and climb to the top of the Premier League.

Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden, and Riyad Mahrez scored for City, who had thrashed Manchester United 6-3 the previous week. Erling Haaland then scored the fourth goal to extend his scoring streak to 10 straight games across all competitions.
At the Etihad Stadium, City has won all five of its Premier League contests while scoring 24 goals.

The victory increased the pressure on early championship contenders Arsenal, who play Liverpool on Sunday with the chance to retake the lead, and put champions City at the top of the league with 23 points after nine games.
Graham Potter’s Chelsea team continued to show signs of growth as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Wolves at home. Wolves are now without a manager after Bruno Lage was fired last week.

Diego Costa, a former Chelsea forward, made his first start for the opposition, but Potter’s team was in complete control and earned their third straight victory across all competitions with goals from Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, and Armando Broja to move up to fourth place in the standings with 16 points.
One year and one day after the completion of their Saudi Arabia-backed acquisition, Newcastle surged up to sixth with a convincing 5-1 home win against Brentford.

On a memorable afternoon for the club, which was languishing in the relegation zone when the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) purchased the club from the previous owner Mike Ashley for a reported 300 million pounds ($333 million), Bruno Guimaraes, a 40-million-pound arrival from Olympique Lyonnais, scored in each half.

Bournemouth overcame a deficit to upset Brendan Rodgers’ team’s Leicester City 2-1. They did it by scoring twice in the span of five second-half minutes.
Leicester took the lead in the 10th minute thanks to a goal from Patson Daka, but Bournemouth responded with goals from Philip Billing and Ryan Christie to maintain their impressive run under interim manager Gary O’Neil, who has won two games and drawn three since taking over for Scott Parker.

The outcome increased the burden on Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers, whose team is currently 19th in the standings with only four points.

Man City rises to the top while Chelsea and Newcastle keep improving.
