Two Israeli security forces were wounded by gunfire at a security checkpoint in Jerusalem

Two security employees were critically hurt in a shooting at a security checkpoint in East Jerusalem, according to a report published on Saturday in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
A Border Police officer and a security guard were hurt at a checkpoint in the Shuafat refugee camp, according to the newspaper, after shooting from a moving car.
She continued by saying that according to a preliminary police report, the shooter was still on the run while the automobile was driving into Jerusalem.

According to the newspaper, the police were informed of a possible attempt to run over the police officers posted in Jerusalem’s Al-Tur area not long after the shooting incident.
According to her, the attempted run-over did not result in any reports of casualties among the cops.

In view of the escalating hostilities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wencesland, pleaded with the Israeli government and the Palestinians on Saturday to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
Wencesland expressed worry about the weakening security situation and the intensification of armed confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli security personnel.

The coordinator claimed in a statement that the rising levels of violence in the West Bank “are fostering an environment of fear, hatred, and rage.” He emphasised that in order to make room for “initiatives aimed at constructing a robust political horizon,” tension must be swiftly reduced.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health had earlier on Saturday reported that Israeli troops’ bullets had struck Jenin in the West Bank, killing two Palestinians and injuring another 11 people.

Security sources told the Palestinian News Agency (Wafa) that dozens of military vehicles attacked the camp in the morning after special Israeli army forces infiltrated the area.
