Seoul: North Korea launches ballistic missile

North Korea has launched a ballistic missile in the direction of the peninsula’s east coast, according to a statement made on Saturday by the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea reported the launch occurred early on Sunday morning local time but provided no other information. Additionally, the Japanese authorities claimed that North Korea might have fired off a ballistic missile.

The latest round of North Korea’s missile tests were justified earlier on Saturday by the country, which emphasised that they were a “legitimate response” to “direct US military threats,” while Washington, Tokyo, and Seoul saw them as a “severe danger to peace and security.”
In less than two weeks, Pyongyang launched seven missiles.
On Thursday, North Korea fired off two ballistic missiles.

Additionally, on Tuesday, it fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRPM) over Japan, forcing some people to seek cover.
The North’s civil aviation department stated in a statement issued by the official news agency that the North’s missile test launch was a routine and planned self-defense move.

The objective of this experiment, she continued, is to “defend national security and regional peace against direct military threats from the United States that have been going on for more than half a century.”
However, the CIA made no mention of which missile launches it was referring to.

In recent weeks, Seoul, Tokyo, and Washington have increased the frequency of their combined military drills. On Thursday, additional drills were held with the involvement of a US Navy destroyer from the USS Ronald Reagan carrier strike group.

The missile launches came after a record number of weapons tests by North Korea, whose leader Kim Jong Un announced that the country now has nuclear weapons and that the situation is “irreversible,” ending any chance of denuclearization negotiations.
