Russia appoints new commander of combat forces in Ukraine

In light of several recent military setbacks, the Russian Defense Ministry said today, Saturday, that it has named General Sergei Sorovikin as the new head of the Russian combat forces in Ukraine.
This modification follows last week’s news of the firing of the Thursday commanders of two Russian military districts.

General Sergei Sorovikin has been appointed commander of the joint group of forces in the field of special military action, according to Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s defence minister, according to a statement released by the Russian Defense Ministry today.
Notably, Sorovikin has been in charge of both the “southern” Russian forces in Syria and the Russian Air Force since October 31, 2017.
