China criticizes new US controls on semiconductor exports

The United States is intentionally banning and repressing Chinese enterprises by violating export control regulations in order to preserve its technical and scientific monopoly, according to Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry.
She continued, “This will affect the interests of American companies as well as the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.”

The “weaponization and politicisation” of science, technology, and economic and trade concerns by the US, according to Mao, will not halt China’s advancement.
The Chinese official made his remarks after the United States on Friday updated its export controls, which included new licencing requirements for products used in supercomputers or for semiconductor research in China as well as the addition of some high-performance computing chips and manufacturing equipment to its list.

Export restrictions, according to the US, have been implemented as part of ongoing measures to safeguard domestic security and foreign policy interests.
In recent years, tensions between the US and China have increased over security and technology issues.
While China has committed billions of dollars to investing in semiconductor manufacture, the United States has put in place a number of barriers and limits to prevent China from acquiring computing chip technology.

The tensions have an impact on American and international semiconductor producers who export or produce computing chips in China.
The stock prices of semiconductor firms like Nvidia and AMD have fallen by 40% in the last year.

The US semiconductor industry’s representative organisation, the Semiconductor Industry Association, responded to the situation by issuing a statement that read: “We understand the goal of ensuring national security and urge the US government to implement the rules in a targeted manner – and in cooperation with international partners – to help level the playing field and mitigate unintended harm to American innovation.
