Meta warns of hacking accounts of more than a million Facebook users

According to Meta, one million Facebook users have had their accounts compromised as a result of downloading or running a malicious programme that was meant to steal Facebook account credentials.
The director of cybersecurity at Meta stated, “We will alert a million users of this warning, although it is not required that their accounts have been stolen.

The parent firm of Facebook and Instagram has discovered more than 400 harmful apps that are available on cellphones running Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iOS since the year’s beginning.
According to a statement from Meta, “These applications were identified on Google and Apple.”

After downloaded and installed on the phone, these applications pretend to be photo-editing tools, games, virtual networks, and other services, but once users enter their Facebook account information, hackers are able to access the accounts. ”
Google claimed to have deleted from their store the majority of the apps that “meta” had reported.
According to a Google official speaking to AFP, “None of the apps named in the study are currently available on the Google Play Store.”

Regarding Apple, it acknowledged that just 45 of the 400 iOS apps had been compromised and that these had been taken down from the App Store.
Over 40% of the apps discovered by Meta are for altering images, while others are restricted to basic functions like converting the phone into a flashlight.
Users are cautioned by Meta to steer clear of applications that demand their metadata or make unreliable claims.

More than a million Facebook users’ accounts could be hacked, according to Meta.
