Washington imposes new restrictions on exports of chips to China

New limitations on China’s access to US semiconductor technology were revealed by the Joe Biden administration, along with additional steps intended to thwart Beijing’s aspirations to establish its own chip industry and strengthen the nation’s military power.

The new measures, according to a report on Friday by Bloomberg News Agency, will tighten regulations on the sale of equipment to produce semiconductors to any Chinese company and ban the export of particular types of chips used in artificial intelligence and supercomputers.

Washington wants to prevent Chinese chip businesses from developing advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and from serving as a conduit for knowledge transfer to their nation’s military.
China is “driving resources into building vast computer capabilities, and trying to become a global leader in artificial intelligence by 2030,” according to Thea D. Rosman Kindler, US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Management.

Chip exports to China are now subject to additional restrictions from Washington.
