The representative of Iraq calls on the Security Council to condemn Iran’s bombing of Kurdistan

Muhammad Bahr al-Ulum, the representative of Iraq to the UN, urged the Security Council to defend his nation’s sovereignty and denounce the invasion of its territory today.
According to the Iraqi News Agency, Bahr al-Uloum informed the Security Council that Iranian bombing of the Kurdistan area had killed Iraqis and terrified the populace, noting that Tehran’s ambassador to Baghdad had delivered a complaint note.

Additionally, it urged the Security Council to denounce any action by an outsider on iraqi territory.
After the Security Council meeting, the UN envoy in Iraq remarked that Iraq needed to be pulled back from the edge.
These declarations followed Iran’s Tuesday renewal of its bombing campaign against targets in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The Halgurd Mountains, northeast of the Erbil Governorate, were the target of missile and artillery attacks, the Revolutionary Guards reported, as well as six Mahaj drone strikes.
Yesterday, the leaders of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi and Nechirvan Barzani, emphasised the importance of upholding Iraqi sovereignty and their refusal to use the nation as a venue for settling regional scores.

It is significant that Muhammad Pakpour, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s ground troops, reported last week that his nation had launched more than 70 ballistic missiles and dozens of drones at more than 40 places in the Kurdistan area, resulting in dozens of casualties and wounds.

Tehran frequently strikes parts of northern Iraq where Iranian Kurdish opposition parties and organisations are situated; despite a dip in recent years, these groups have historically engaged in armed resistance against the Iranian government.

However, these groups are still very critical of the situation in Iran, and they have recently become very active. This has apparently infuriated Tehran, as it has posted videos of the protests the nation has seen since the young woman Mahsa Amini died on September 16 after being detained by the so-called “moral police” on social media.

The Iraqi envoy requests that Iran’s bombing of Kurdistan be denounced by the Security Council.
