Quebec unions say they don’t have time to help students’ brush teeth

Teachers in Quebec said they don’t have enough time to see their students brush their teeth every day.
Teachers’ unions argue that their members already have a heavy job and that it is not the right time to burden them with the duty of ensuring that their kids’ lips are clean.
The programmes, which require instructors to make sure pupils wash their teeth for two minutes each day, are being gradually implemented throughout the province. The unions are responding to this.

The initiative is a good idea but completely unrealistic, according to Josee Scalabrini, head of the Federation des syndicats de l’enseignement, which represents 87,000 teachers.
The Federation autonome de l’enseignement, a different union with more than 60,000 members, claims that the program’s requirements are wholly unrelated to what really occurs in classrooms.

The Health Department created the program—for daycare centres and elementary schools—in 2017, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its implementation.

Quebec unions claim they don’t have time to assist students with their oral hygiene.
