South Korea and the United States conduct missile exercises in response to North Korea

The military of South Korea and the US launched a salvo of missiles into the ocean in retaliation for North Korea’s ballistic missile launch over Japan.
According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, separate missile drills were conducted by the US and South Korean forces.
Two US-developed ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles were fired by each side, according to a statement.

Nuclear-armed Japanese citizens were advised to seek shelter after North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) over that country for the first time in five years.
The military independently confirmed there were no casualties as a result of the South Korean Hyunmoo-2 missile’s malfunction soon after launch and fall.

North Korea’s test was described as a “reckless and deliberately provocative move” by the European Union, “in the harshest terms” by US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and “in breach of Security Council resolutions” by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

According to diplomats, China and Russia opposed the United States’ proposal for a meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday to discuss North Korea.
