Reports: Berlin returns German citizens from Syria, including women

Several German nationals have been returned from northeastern Syria by the German government, a spokeswoman for the interior ministry said today, Wednesday.
German nationals were repatriated with the help of the Federal Criminal Police Office.
The ministry withheld further information and stated that it made its choice after taking into account the rights and protection of minors, among other factors.

The revelation followed media reports claiming that some German women accused of aiding the terrorist group ISIS had returned from Syria with their children.
Four women and a number of children were reportedly detained for years in Kurdish detention facilities.
The women are being looked into by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and other public prosecutor’s offices on suspicion of, among other things, joining a terrorist group.

Many ISIS sympathisers have been repatriated by the German authorities from Syria on numerous occasions; some of them were later convicted and sentenced to lengthy prison terms.
