According to the decree, “The Russian Federation’s government should ensure that the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant’s nuclear facilities and other property required for carrying out its operations are accepted as federal property.”
Early in March, Russian forces seized control of Zaporizhia, the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe, not far from the border between the areas occupied by Moscow and Kiev.

• The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant was conceived of during the Soviet era, and work on it started in 1980.
• Six reactors with the hydro-hydro capacity designation “VVIR-1000 V-320” are located in the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant. Water is used to cool the reactors and the neutrons within them. They use uranium 235, which has a half-life of more than 700 million years. In 1995, the network connection for its sixth reactor was made.

Each of the six Zaporizhia units has a net capacity of 950 MW, for a total of 5. 7 GW, making it one of the ten largest power plants in the world. It supplies 20% of Ukraine’s electrical needs.
At a formal ceremony held in the Kremlin on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed agreements extending to four Ukrainian provinces under Russian control: Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia.
