Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi commented on the arrival of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan, saying: “China will certainly take all necessary measures to firmly protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
China believes that the visit of a high-ranking US official, which may be the first in about 25 years, carries an implicit recognition by America of the independence of Taiwan, which China considers an essential part of its territory.
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: “Our delegation’s visit to Taiwan fulfills America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant democracy”.
“If US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, China will take resolute and forceful response measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian.
