Kuwait Oil Union: We warn against delaying the realization of workers’ demands and rights

Abbas Awad, the head of the Kuwait Oil Union, issued a warning against postponing the fulfilment of workers’ demands and rights, pointing out that there are blatant infractions in promotions and situational changes that would erase the prior labour of workers who had violated the law.

We have a system and regulations at Kuwait Oil, so why do you introduce regulations that damage workers?, Awad asked during a press conference when the union summoned him to speak to the company’s management. He added, “We are with any amendment that depends on the application of efficiency.

Although we have been assured of several demands at various levels, we have not yet heard from them, Awad said, “There are workers who tend to file cases to acquire their rights.
Awad expressed his confidence in the new administration, the Petroleum Corporation’s new CEO, and the business’s upcoming president while giving the management of the corporation time to address the unresolved problems.

“The workers demand the right to see their grades, and the system must be addressed with regard to Regulation 16 and below,” Awad said in reference to some of the unresolved concerns between the employees and the previous management of the company and the previous board of directors.

Regarding the front rows and licences, Awad emphasised that it is a matter of time because there are external and internal issues. He cited what Al-Rai published in this regard and noted that the number of licences monitored was lower than anticipated for the oil sector; however, the matter was suspended pending agreement with the other authorities.

Awad urged officials to provide the oil industry the authority to pay the front row award, citing the recognition of oil workers’ rights by the past and present oil ministers in light of the fact that some foreign parties want to exclude the oil sector.

According to Awad, “We are not asking for money; rather, we seek the right and are content with a medal or a certificate of appreciation. However, the right is one and not divided as long as the government decides for us to be rewarded for our position in the case of the globe.
Awad emphasised that the union will pursue its demands following the establishment of the government, urging the National Assembly’s urgent budget committee to approve the front rows and purchase holidays.

According to Awad, when it comes to pending cases, we always tell corporate executives: “I am not responsible for your firm or your property, but I am answerable to the Lord of the Worlds for the employees.

The promotions system for those aged 16 and under related to the new promotion system, which was issued in the month of 8 in 2021, was previously rejected by the previous union due to the presence of many shortcomings and reservations on many points in it, according to Saad Al-Hajri, assistant secretary of the company’s workers’ union. All system flaws and observations were debunked.

Al-Hajri continued by saying that the company’s response throughout the discussions was that this system is a corporate decision and cannot be changed or expanded upon.
He questioned, “How were these clauses introduced, as opposed to other clauses, if the decision is not amenable to revision or addition.”

Al-Hajri emphasised that the union is not opposed to any new decisions as long as the rights of the workers are upheld. He said: “Some officials, when implementing any decision, are looking for something that detracts from the workers’ right, and this is not surprising from them because we have grown accustomed over the past years that they create an atmosphere of aggravation with their policies that It must be stopped.

He emphasised that there are labour issues and significant files that are hidden in the drawers and need to be resolved because of the extreme imbalance. Intervention is necessary to halt this interference with workers’ rights.
The workers carried us in faith, Al-Hajri said in his conclusion. We must protect their rights and right wrongs done to them.

Therefore, as the official workers’ representative for the Kuwait Oil Company, we announce a sit-in, the date and time of which will be decided soon in light of the information and the importance of resolving these labour issues.

We caution against delaying the fulfilment of workers’ requests and rights, said the Kuwait Oil Union.
