Donald Trump, a former US president, has requested the US Supreme Court to get involved in the dispute over records that were taken last summer at his Florida mansion, Mar-a-Lago.
In response to a warrant for “holding sensitive documents” and “obstructing a federal investigation,” FBI officers carried out an unusual search on August 8 and seized around thirty more boxes.
The Republican millionaire urgently asked the Supreme Court to stop the Ministry of Justice from looking over 100 of the “secret” documents that had been seized in this case.
This request raises an objection to a Court of Appeal decision that permits the Ministry to examine documents without first awaiting the findings of the work of an independent expert charged with document review. It has nothing to do with the legality of the Federal Police’s August search of Mar-a-Lago or the substance of the case. The 11,000 were taken away.
But Donald Trump’s appeal does not have to be accepted by the Supreme Court, which under his presidency saw significant modifications. Its nine members include six conservative judges, but it has given him problems, including when she refused to back him in his post-election campaign.
The White House archives are at issue in this latest legal dispute.
Donald Trump took entire cartons of documents with him when he left office in January 2021, despite a 1978 statute requiring all US presidents to surrender their working emails, paperwork, and other materials to the National Archives.
