US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken “welcomed” a tripartite phone call with his Azerbaijani counterparts Jehon Peramov and Armenia’s Ararat Mirzoyan to the meeting they conducted in Geneva on Sunday, according to a statement from US State Department spokesman Ned Price.
Blinken praised the “release of prisoners of war” and emphasised US support for “assisting Armenia and Azerbaijan in peacefully resolving their differences.
The “only way forward” to end the tension between the two countries, he added, is through diplomacy.
Before a cease-fire was achieved in the middle of the month, at least 286 soldiers from the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides had been killed in what were thought to be the bloodiest clashes since 2020.
