Yemeni military official: Houthis bomb army positions in Taiz

A Yemeni military spokesman claimed on Sunday that the Houthi militia attacked National Army positions in the Taiz region in the southwest.
Abdul Basit al-Bahr, the Taiz axis’ spokesman, informed the Yemeni News Agency that the group attempted to “infiltrate” Taiz by targeting army positions in the city’s north, west, and east with mortar shells, artillery, medium, and heavy weaponry, and other weapons.

The agency quoted him as saying that the army forces drove back the Houthis and suffered “huge losses” from them.
This comes as UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg expressed sadness that a deal to extend the cease-fire following its expiration on Sunday was not achieved, urging the parties to keep composure and avoid any steps that would lead to an escalation of violence.

The Houthis’ unwillingness to extend the ceasefire was not a surprise to the Yemeni government, Yemen’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak had said. He claimed that the Houthis impeded efforts to extend the cease-fire and did not put the interests of the Yemeni people ahead of their own in an interview with Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath.
We have made every attempt to lessen the suffering of the Yemeni people, he declared. For the benefit of, we have made compromises to prolong the armistice.

Despite the Houthi’s intransigence, the government has made numerous concessions to extend the truce and has responded favourably to the UN plan.
The Houthis “received more than 200 billion Yemeni riyals during the truce,” the Yemeni foreign minister continued, stressing that the militia did not comply by the agreement and refused to open highways.
