Austrian Chancellor: We seek to develop energy security and end dependence on Russia

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehmer reaffirmed his nation’s efforts today, on Sunday, to break its reliance on Russia and increase its energy security.
Nehmer stressed that current times of crisis require coordination in his speech at the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the birth of Austria’s first chancellor after World War II, Leopold Weigl. “The European Union seeks to maintain a state of political consensus and defend Ukraine in the face of the current unjust war,” Nehmer said.

“The Austrians are living in times of crisis of new dimensions… and we find that three years after the pandemic crisis, the war crisis erupted, something that we could not have imagined and became a reality,” he continued, noting that this crisis has many ramifications and results and that it revealed a significant dependence on Russia in the energy sector. The Austrian chancellor emphasised the need to build up defensive skills against misleading political propaganda and those who loathe and seek to destroy democracy in Europe at times of crises.
