Russia loses its seat on the board of the international aviation agency

Al-Madina News: As part of the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russia lost its seat on the board of the United Nations aviation organisation. This is another effort to put pressure on Russia.
During the General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is taking place in Montreal until October 7th, Russia was unable to secure the 86 votes required to continue in the 36-nation Council.

Following the outcome of the vote, a procedural review got under way on Saturday following a Russian appeal. The association’s president and South Africa’s director general of civil aviation, Bobby Khoza, called these circumstances “unusual.”
The French envoy informed the General Assembly that when there is a vote and we don’t like the outcome, we don’t call for another vote in our country.

Russia holds a privileged position on the organization’s council as “countries of vital importance in air transport,” along with the G7 nations, China, Brazil, and Australia.
The Russian envoy added, “We would like to express our disappointment over the result of the vote, we consider it to be a purely political step and unrelated to Russia’s standing in the sector of civil aviation.

According to “Arabi21,” Yulia Kovalev, Ukraine’s ambassador to Canada, said the vote’s outcome represents Russia’s responsibility for violating Ukraine’s sovereign airspace, including by bombing Ukrainian airports, which runs counter to a significant 1944 agreement that outlines the fundamental rules of international aviation.
She continued, “It is crucial that all ICAO members confront such an obvious breach of the Chicago Convention.

The West accuses Russia of forcibly seizing hundreds of foreign aircraft, a claim Moscow refutes. Russia approved the listing of aircraft leased from foreign businesses by its airlines in the nation’s aircraft registry in March.
Any foreign aircraft that Russian airlines charter that has a dual registration is in violation of the Chicago Convention.

Russia is expelled from the international aviation organization’s board.
